Charles' experience has been in building businesses in a number of industry sectors including financial services, media, media tech and most recently edtech. He co-founded IBIS Capital in 2003 in order to create a flexible, boutique investment bank that could both invest in and advise companies and their shareholders. 12 years on and IBIS Capital has evolved into a leading specialist asset manager and investment banking operation with over 60 successfully completed transactions. Charles also sits on the boards of a range of entrepreneurial companies in the media and education sectors. In 2013, Charles started focusing on the e-Learning and edtech markets and was responsible for a number of key industry initiatives including co-founding EdTech Europe, an annual summit for strategic players and investors interested in the online education market.

Charles began his career with the investment banking arm of Apax Partners, one of the leading independent private equity firms in the UK where he helped build the company’s media franchise. In 1998, together with other senior management, Charles spun off the investment banking arm of Apax Partners to form Altium Capital. Over the next two years the business was built up into a pan-European investment bank operating with offices in 7 countries with 140 people, before being sold in 2000 for $225m. Charles was the Managing Director responsible for European media investment banking and was involved in a wide range of fundraising and M&A transactions.

Benjamin combines 15 years of operational, investment and advisory experience in the Media, Entertainment, Advertising and Education industries, with a particular focus on digital transition situations.

Formerly EMEA Head of Strategy, Business Development and New Ventures for Time Warner, Benjamin directly managed the expansion of a portfolio of TV and Digital Entertainment assets spanning across 25 counties and totalling €650m in revenues. As Global Digital Lead, he also conducted the digital transition of the group’s global media brands (CNN, Cartoon Network, Turner Sports etc.) and managed its portfolio of digital ventures, new media franchises and gaming services.

Benjamin previously held various managerial and corporate development roles at Modern Times Group (TV, Digital Media, Ecommerce), Lagardere Media (Print, TV, Radio) and Omnicom BBDO (Advertising & Marketing Services), involving acquisitions, roll out and development of entrepreneurial media businesses across Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.

During his career, Benjamin has been directly involved in more than 50 transactions ranging from M&A, greenfield investments, divestments, roll ups, strategic partnerships, joint ventures and minority investments.

Benjamin is co-founder of EdTech Europe, Europe’s largest conference on Education Technology conference for senior executives and investors. He also serves as advisor for SXSW Edu, the world’s largest conference on Education.

Benjamin is non-executive director of SolidLabs, an education technology company designing and manufacturing connected toys.

He is a graduate of Babson, ESCP Europe and The University of Texas at Austin.

Philipp has over 20 years experience acquiring, growing and selling media businesses. He started the Burgwalden strategy consultancy in 2010 following a career managing a portfolio of pay TV networks at Sony Pictures.
Philipp co-founded a radio station while at university. He then built the business development teams of two successful internet start-ups in Munich. eCircle was a portfolio company of Wellington and Deutsche Telekom’s corporate venture arm and sold to US private equity firm TA Associates.
During Business School, Philipp advised Turner Broadcasting on a joint-venture with ProSiebenSat.1. The venture brought the Cartoon Network brand onto ProSieben in a branded Saturday morning programming block.
At Sony Pictures Philipp first launched 6 TV channels with combined investment of $100m. He then became General Manager for the Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa channels portfolio spanning 75 countries. In this role he launched two independent ad sales businesses, acquired a pan-regional TV network and spearheaded the global turnaround of the Animax brand.
Since 2010, Philipp has focused on advising corporate and private equity investors through Burgwalden. During that time he also managed M&A and digital investment activities for Pearson. Recently, he led a B-Series VC funding round into US-based mobile start-up Voxy and represented Pearson on the board. In the past 24 months Philipp has advised on $1.5bn in acquisitions and post-merger integrations.

Henry has over 10 years of experience in venture capital as well as involvement in executive management, M&As and IPOs. His sector knowledge spans internet media, technology, gaming, leisure, healthcare IT, infrastructure and real estate funds. In 2004, Henry founded LifeStageMedia plc, an owner and operator of consumer websites in the U.S. The business achieved a successful exit five years later to a private equity consortium of TPG Growth and Leonard Green & Partners. Henry has served as founding Principal of Fairfax I.S. (U.S.) LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of Fairfax I.S. plc, a UK investment bank and has advised a range of early stage and growth companies.

Jamie has over ten years of advisory experience in venture capital, private equity, M&A, IPOs, restructurings, joint ventures and fundraisings. Jamie has advised start-ups through to FTSE 100 companies. In addition to corporates, Jamie has acted for funders, stakeholders and management teams.

Jamie’s experience spans a number of sectors, including technology, healthcare, telecoms, media, advertising, real estate and energy.

Jamie spent six years as a corporate lawyer at Ashurst, working in their London and Paris offices. Whilst at Ashurst, Jamie was seconded to the equity capital markets team of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he worked on a number of IPOs and equity fundraisings.

Prior to joining Ibis, Jamie was a partner at Wilsons Solicitors LLP, where he established and built their London corporate team.
Jamie holds an MA in History from The University of St Andrews and is a qualified solicitor of England and Wales.

Rory joined IBIS Capital in 2012 from the Technology, Internet, Media & Telecoms Investment Banking team at Jefferies & Co, where he focused mostly on Internet and Media businesses. Previous working experience includes UBS and H.J. Heinz in London and Hong Kong respectively. Rory is a graduate of the University of Bristol with a BSc in Accounting & Finance.

Ivan joined IBIS Capital in 2014 and is a member of the Mergers and Acquisitions team advising global corporates and financial sponsors across the company’s target sectors of media and technology. Since joining, Ivan’s transaction execution experience has included private and public company sell side and buy side M&A assignments and corporate divestitures across several technology sub-sectors such as digital media, gaming and healthtech. Ivan previously worked in equity research covering the North American and European cleantech sectors. He holds an MSc Finance degree from Imperial College London graduating with Distinction and a BSc (hons) Economics degree from Purdue University graduating summa cum laude. Besides his advisory capacity, Ivan is an angel investor in online businesses and maintains an active interest in the digital space. Ivan is also working towards becoming a CFA Charterholder and is also fluent in Mandarin.

Michelle brings a background of media studies, public relations, and digital marketing experience to the IBIS Capital team. Prior to moving to London, she managed the PR and digital marketing programmes for two leading children’s fashion brands in San Francisco. She also has been a PR and social media consultant for a variety of startups, including a global online news site and school donation e-commerce company. Michelle has additionally held research positions for the University of Leeds and Eckerd College as well as communications internships with non-profit organizations and the United States Senate. She is a graduate of the University of Leeds, receiving her MA in International Communications; studying how born-on-the-web news sites like BuzzFeed construct international news stories to engage with millennial audiences. Michelle joined the EdTech Europe team in 2014 to assist in organizing the EdTech Europe conference and partner events and is also responsible for creating compelling editorial content that shares unique perspectives about education companies, founders, and other key trends within the industry.

As Global Events Director, Laura is managing our events worldwide and is actively supporting our international events strategy.

Laura has previously been responsible for leading content development and commercial expansion of a wide range of business conferences across multiple sectors. Most recently she has worked at Gartner, the leading IT research provider. As a Senior Program Manager, Laura oversaw a portfolio of large scale events in Europe and North America and had an opportunity to successfully launch bespoke programs for the Chief Data Officers worldwide. Prior to Gartner, Laura was leading the expansion of C-level Executive Telecom Forum division in EMEA at a conference production company marcus evans.

Laura holds BA in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Leeds, a degree which helped her to transition her curiosity and love to chat to professional environments. During her time at university she was awarded a research scholarship by DARE partnership between Opera North and the University of Leeds. As part of the program she spent two years researching global opera landscape and managing international opera conferences connecting European and Asian arts.
